Indications

Celebrex (celecoxib)

Celebrex is indicated and registered in South Africa for the therapy of pain and inflammation in various forms of arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and in addition for various forms of pain including dental pain

Rheumatoid arthritis

This is an inflammatory arthritis, characterised by a symmetrical arthritis, with pain, swelling, stiffness, morning stiffness and midday fatigue

Early RA may show little or no swelling, but examination may reveal thickening of the synovial lining of the joints

Late RA may show considerable damage and deformity and therefore disease modifying therapy is required to prevent progression of disease. Celebrex will NOT stop progression of disease, and therefore it is essential you still receive appropriate therapy. The drug is for symptomatic therapy ONLY. You must ensure that you see a rheumatologist if possible.

Osteoarthritis

This is largely a degenerative process of the cartilage and bone margins, characterised by pain through the day and with activity, and less stiffness, or transient stiffness. In addition there is bony thickening of the joint margins - called osteophytes.

The joint problem is most commonly seen as one gets older. There is usually a family history of similar problems.

The end joints of the hands and fingers are commonly involved, with bony swellings called heberden and bouchard nodes.

Large joints are also commonly involved, especially hip, knees and the spine
